Weekday Weddings – Why A Non-Traditional Date Might be Right for You

@offtherailsweddings

It all started in 2022, as we were coming out of the lockdowns and restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic. People who had put off their wedding ceremony were anxious to get married and willing to do it whenever they could book a venue. While Saturdays have long been the most popular day to get married, and remain so, there are only 52 Saturdays in a year. That means the available dates and times at the venue of your choice are limited if you’re only looking at having a wedding on a Saturday. Therefore, many couples are looking at alternative wedding dates, and keeping that post-pandemic trend going.

Who Chooses a Weekday Wedding?

Weekday events are often smaller and more informal than traditional weekend weddings. Here at Legacy Stables and Events, we often see couples who are renewing their vows or those for whom it’s not their first wedding ceremony planning a wedding during the week.

Sometimes it’s the date itself that leads to a weekday wedding. Couples might choose to get married on the same date as the day they met or commemorate their first date by having their wedding ceremony on that date. There are also times when people plan their wedding around the phases of the moon or astrology charts. It might even be that some people see certain days as more lucky than others. It’s not a new concept, as proven by the old Celtic rhyme:

Monday’s for wealth
Tuesday’s for health
Wednesday’s the day of all
Thursday’s for losses
Friday’s for crosses
And Saturday has no luck at all.

Why have a Weekday Wedding?

There are some definite benefits to having a wedding on a weekday (Monday-Thursday).

Availability of Venue. With more “days” available on the calendar and less competition for each date, you’re more likely to be able to reserve the place you want to have your wedding, especially if you’re planning to get married relatively quickly.

Affordability. Many vendors and venues will offer discounts to people planning a wedding during this week. This is a benefit of the economics of supply and demand. Wedding photographers and caterers are typically booked solid on weekends but have more open time during the week. Therefore, they’re willing to discount their rates to encourage people to take advantage of their services during off-peak times, to stay busy, and to take on more jobs.

Tips for Planning Your Weekday Wedding

One of the most important things to consider is the availability of your wedding party and guests. While sometimes people plan a wedding during the week to get the venue they want for a wedding that is being planned on short notice, it’s a good idea to let guests know of the plans as soon as possible. Send out those save-the-date cards so people can clear their calendars. Having a wedding during the week means your event runs into conflicts with other responsibilities such as school, work, and extracurricular activities. But with advance notice people can plan around it.

Talk with the people who you want to include in your bridal party, family members and close friends, to make sure they’re available for a wedding during the week.

Consider whether you will be inviting guests who will need to travel. Weekday weddings might be more convenient for couples whose guests are mostly local. However, traveling isn’t totally out of the realm of possibility. If you have the wedding on a Thursday they can take a long weekend to enjoy a trip for your wedding.
