No Room for Hesitation
One thing about a tighter timeline for wedding planning is that there’s not a lot of time for daydreaming. If you’re the type of person to set a wedding date for just six months out from your engagement (or even sooner), then it’s highly likely you’re already the type of person who is able to make decisions well. Keep on doing that. Whether you’re looking for a photographer or choosing invitations, it’s important to be able to make quick decisions. Choose that invitation and move on to the next thing on your list without spending a lot of time researching and debating the different designs and styles.
Which leads to the next advice: Have a clear vision. With a shortened planning timeframe, there’s not a lot of time for hours spent researching and setting up Pinterest boards or scrolling through TikTok and Instagram. It’s highly likely that you’ve been to a few weddings and seen pictures on your feeds already, enough to have an idea of what you want. Clarify that vision early and stick with it. It will make all of the rest of the planning and decision-making a lot easier.
And finally, be flexible. Sure, you have a vision, and you’re good at making decisions under pressure. But along the way, there will be times when what you want is out of your control. For example, the photographer that you’d had in mind could likely be booked already, or the flowers you’d imagined being part of your bridal bouquet aren’t in season. The ability to pivot and go with something else will make the planning process go much more smoothly. And chances are, everything will be just as great on the day of the wedding, even without your top choices.
What to Do Right out of the Gate
One thing we reassure brides who choose to plan a wedding in six months or less is that you’ve still got time; there’s no need to panic. After all, you’re not trying to plan a wedding in just a couple of weeks. However, there are a few things you will want to do as soon as possible.
- Set a Date/Find a Venue. These two things go hand in hand, and it’s important to do it early, not only to get your venue booked but also so you can let friends and family know to keep their calendar clear. If you’ve got a particular date in mind, you might need to be flexible on the venue and call around to see who has openings available. On the flip side, if your heart is set on a specific venue, you might need to be flexible on the date. You could even consider a weekday wedding, or a Sunday afternoon, times that aren’t traditionally booked for weddings.
- Alert family and friends, and choose your bridal party. Once you’ve got the date set, you want to make sure your loved ones have your wedding on their calendar, and aren’t making other plans!
- Go Dress Shopping. Gather up your friends, mother, and future mother-in-law, and hit the shops. Dresses that are special order, or custom, typically take nine months or longer to get made, so you’ll need to consider looking for a dress that is ready-to-ship or even off the rack. But don’t worry, there are plenty of options out there. Just don’t wait too long. The reason this is on the “right away” list is that you’ll most likely still need to work on alterations and fittings.
